What Our Pharmacist Recommends

Our Stag Direct pharmacist shares quick, trusted advice on common health conditions - from colds to allergies.

Find out what works best and see product recommendations direct from our online store.

Cold & Flu Symptoms

If you have cold or flu symtoms such as fever, sore throat or stuffy nose I would recommend an all in one solution such as Galpharm All-In-One Cold & Flu Liquid which tackles most symptoms including a chesty cough.

Take 20ml up to four times a day - and don't take with paracetamol as it contains it already.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Allergies

If you have signs of allergies and hayfever such as sneezing, watery eyes or an itchy rash on your skin I would recommend Fexofenadine 120mg tablets. It is non-drowsy and you just need to take one tablet a day. If you have an itchy rash such as from an insect bite or sting, I would recommend Histergan cream as it will help to calm the itching by reducing the histamine being released by the body in response to the reaction.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Dry Eyes

For simple dry eye conditions caused by dust exposure or looking at computer screens for too long I would recommend Hy-Opti eye drops. It contains 0.2% Sodium Hyaluronate, an effective moisturiser which helps to reduce irritation and dryness. It is preservative free and can be kept open for 6 months once opened.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Home Care

To measure and monitor your blood pressure at home I recommend A&D UA-611 Blood Pressure Monitor. It is simple to use, battery operated and has colour indicators to show if your blood pressure is normal or elevated.

For blood sugar monitoring I recommend either the finger prick test monitor GlucoRx Go as it is simple to use and portable. It is also affordable as it comes with 50 testing strips. If budget allows, I would recommend the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus as it removes the need to extract blood from the fingers.

Sleep Disorders

For those who are struggling to sleep due to working shift changes or behavioural changes and want to get back into a routine, I recommend Lunox Max Strength Sleep Aid as it is clinically proven to help you drift off to sleep. Or, if you prefer herbal remedies, Numark Herbal Sleep Aid tablets are the go to option. They contain extracts of Hops, Valerian and Passion Flower, ingredients used traditionally to help aid a restful nights sleep.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Quitting Smoking

Want to improve your overall health and reduce the risks of developing many health conditions? Our quit-smoking aids and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products are clinically proven to increase the chances of a successful quit attempt. Everyone's quit journey is different but normally I recommend a long acting NRT patch such as Nicotinell 24 hour patches alongside a quick acting product such as Nicorette Gums or Nicotinell Mouth Spray.

Our Stoney Lane branch offers a 12-week stop smoking clinic for those who live, work or have a GP based in Birmingham where they can offer NRT products free of charge (if you are exempt from NHS prescription charges). Contact them for furter information.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Dry Skin

For simple dry skin conditions such as that caused by eczema and psoriasis, I recommend Epimax Oatmeal Cream as it contains colloidal oatmeal which provides long lasting relief. For scaling and inflamed psoriasis symptoms I recommend Psoriderm Cream. The coal tar and lecithin formulation helps to calm and soothe the skin.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Weight Loss

To aid your weight loss journey, we currently have Orlistat 60mg capsules available as the Alli and Orlos brands. It helps reduce the amount of fat absorbed from your meals which in turn reduces the amount of fat stored by your body.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Pain Relief

Pain can be caused by many conditions. For simple muscle and joint aches I recommend Care Diclofenac 2.32% Gel which helps reduce pain and inflammation at the application site. I also recommend FlexiSeq for those who want a drug free remedy for aching joints.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.

Supplements

If you are looking for a complete A-Z multivitamin, I recommend SynBio Complete Ultra A-Z Multivitamin Tablets as it contains vitamins A,B,C,D,E,K as well as Zinc and Magnesium among many more. It is also vegetarian, gluten free and gelatin free.

Liquid iron supplements are also very popular and I recommend Feredet which is available in 200ml and 500ml sizes or Ferrodate Plus which is the most economical option.

For childhood supplements, I recommend Abidec Multivitamin Drops as it contains the vitamins needed to aid healthy growth.

If you take any other medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, or you have any other symptoms please contact our pharmacist for further advice.
